A 20-year-old New Jersey man was charged with driving while intoxicated after a fatal crash on Saturday night. The accident occurred at about 11:00 pm, when the 20-year-old driver struck a minivan driven by the 43-year-old man who lost his life in the tragic accident. Two other passengers in the minivan were also injured.

While any DWI charge is serious, when it is related to a tragic accident such as this one, the consequences can be all the more severe. Accidents like this can result in criminal charges and possibly prison time.

According to local news reports, when the vehicles collided it sent the minivan spinning out of control. The minivan then went over a railing that separates the local lanes from the express lanes. As the minivan spun into the express lanes it was hit by another vehicle.

The driver of the other vehicle in the express lane was not seriously injured, but the driver of the minivan died at the scene. A passenger in the front seat of the minivan was seriously injured and airlifted to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. Another passenger, riding in the back seat, suffered back and neck injuries and remains hospitalized, but his injuries are not expected to be life threatening.

Of course, a fatal car crash can be devastating for the family of the victim that lost his life. While the driver who has been charged with DWI in relation to the accident likely feels deeply remorseful, he still has rights which deserve protection in court.
