Atlantic City, New Jersey residents may know that having sexual relationship with a minor by a person entrusted with the welfare of the minor is a serious crime. If a teacher has sexual relations with a student, the teacher may face serious criminal charges, including sexual assault.
Florida authorities recently arrested a New Jersey school teacher who faces charges of having sexual relations with a 16-year-old student. Reportedly, the female teacher had sexual relations with a 16-year-old male student in a Union County, New Jersey where she was teaching algebra. Prosecutors say that she had sex with the boy several times in a locked room after school hours. Authorities have charged her with sexual assault of a minor.
According to reports, the teacher was aware of an impending arrest warrant issued for her and to allegedly evade arrest, she fled to Florida, and checked herself into a rehabilitation center. However, detectives managed to track her down through phone call and text-message records. According to prosecutors, the accused also asked the student to destroy evidence of their affair before she fled to Florida.
The alleged crime came to light when the student told his parents about the sexual misconduct of the teacher. Upon hearing of the teacher’s sexual misconduct, the school administration immediately put the teacher on administrative leave pending the investigation of the case. She is currently being held in Florida on a $200,000 bail bond. The teacher is expected to return to New Jersey after facing an extradition hearing.
Those accused of sexual assault and other sex crimes, or those who anticipate facing sexual assault charges, in New Jersey should carefully formulate a defense strategy.
